This morning, Nick Clift and I had the pleasure of recording another episode of MSP Mastery with Melissa Hockenberry.

Today’s conversation felt like more than just another podcast recording. It was also a bit of a walk down memory lane.
Melissa and I first worked together back in 2008 when we implemented Autotask. At the time, we were focused on the practicalities of building, improving and supporting a growing business. Like so many relationships in our industry, it began with work to be done, problems to solve and outcomes to deliver.
Then in 2010, we met face to face at ACL in Miami.
Looking back, it’s a reminder of just how much business is built through people, not just process.
Over the years, we all gather relationships that begin in one season of business and continue to evolve over time. Some start as supplier relationships. Some begin through projects, partnerships or events. Some grow through shared experience, trust and mutual respect. And before you know it, those connections become part of your professional story.
That is one of the things I value most about building a business and a career over the long term.
When you’ve been in business for a while, you start to appreciate that not everything important shows up immediately on a spreadsheet. The real value often reveals itself later. In the lessons learned together. In the challenges navigated. In the conversations that pick up years later as though no time has passed. In the trust that has been built steadily, quietly and consistently.
There is something very grounding about reconnecting with people who knew you, your business or your industry years ago. People who remember the early systems, the different stages of growth, the decisions being made at the time and the context behind them.
It reminds you how far you’ve come.
It also reminds you that business is never built alone.
For many entrepreneurs and leadership teams, it is easy to stay focused on the immediate pressure in front of them. The next target. The next hire. The next issue. The next quarter. And of course those things matter. But so do the relationships that support the journey over time.
Strong businesses are not only built on strategy and execution. They are also built on trust, consistency and connection.
The people we work with across the years often shape more than we realise. They influence how we think. They challenge us. They support us through growth. They bring perspective when things are difficult. And sometimes, they help us remember where we started.
That is why moments like this morning matter.
Recording with Melissa was a lovely reminder of the long-term connections that can come from simply doing good work, staying in touch and continuing to show up in the industry over time. These relationships become part of the fabric of our businesses and careers. They help us grow not just professionally, but personally too.
As leaders, I think there is real value in recognising and appreciating that.
The businesses we build may evolve.
The roles we hold may change.
The tools, platforms and ways of working may move on.
But the relationships we build along the way often remain one of the most meaningful parts of the journey.
And for that, I’m grateful.
A huge thank you again to Melissa Hockenberry for joining Nick and me on MSP Mastery this morning. It was a brilliant conversation, and a real pleasure to reflect on shared history, industry change and the value of long-term connection.
